Generation-VHS

A podcast about direct-to-video movies from the 80s, 90s & early millennium.

WHICH MOVIE WILL BE CHOSEN FOR EPISODE 14?

Episode 14 of GENERATION-VHS is currently being assembled, piece by piece. It might be a few weeks yet; but it certainly will prove to be another leap, in terms of the genres on the shelf.

Whilst the jigsaw falls into place, here's the customary clue as to the movie under review: in the lead-up to Episode 6, we referenced 1969's The Stranger's Gundown and 1973's High Plains Drifter. Episode 14's slow-burner (from 1990) may not have the same gothic overtones or similar action icons, but it's very much their haunted heir apparent.

WHICH MOVIE WILL BE CHOSEN FOR EPISODE 13?

Episode 13 of GENERATION-VHS has experienced some unforeseen hold-ups. As a result, it may be a number of months before it lands on the "New Releases" shelf.

In the meantime, here's a clue as to the content of the episode: the film that will be featured in the next edition is an appealing antipodean road movie from 2009 which, appropriately enough, co-stars a presenter from series 3 of television's top gear australia.

WHICH MOVIE WILL BE CHOSEN FOR EPISODE 12?

Episode 12 of Generation-VHS should arrive on the "New Releases" shelf some time in the first week of the next month.

Many thanks for checking back with us, after our summer hiatus.

And, as ever, here's a brief clue as to the upcoming title:

This 1992 escapade was helmed by a director who, according to sources, was the first ever international film-maker to direct a vampire picture in the mythic home of the Count, Transylvania.

WHICH MOVIE WILL BE CHOSEN FOR EPISODE 11?

Episode 11 of Generation-VHS should be stocked on the shelves some time in the first week of next month.

Many thanks for continuing to check back with us.

Whilst we wait, here's a brief clue as to the contents of the next edition:

This first movie in a four-film-franchise from 1973 showcases a recently-departed superstar of European cinema who, in an earlier career, was an Olympic-standard freestyle swimmer.

WHICH MOVIE WILL BE CHOSEN FOR EPISODE 10?

Episode 10 of Generation-VHS will be along as soon as time and other commitments allow.

Many thanks for checking back with us.

In the interim, here's a clue to point you in the direction of the film we'll be looking at:

This blink-and-you'd-have-missed-it portrait from 2007 has a down-to-earth central performance from a British actor who in many ways is a "rising star".

Fittingly, this star has been in movies that have visited the Moon, Mars, taken a perilously-close trip to the Sun, and even ventured light years out to the distant planet of "LV-223".

Max.

WHICH MOVIE WILL BE CHOSEN FOR EPISODE 9?

Episode 9 of Generation-VHS should appear in the Podcast Archive during the first week of June.

In the meanwhile, here's a clue as to which film we'll be considering:

This little-seen 1995 double-hander marks the last English-language credit of a craftsman who has worked with a number of the most famous faces in the last half-century of Italian cinema (Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci, Sergio Garrone, even Dario Argento) and who then, thanks at first to an association with Dino De Laurentiis, moved on to collaborate with similarly notable names in the Hollywood hemisphere (Spielberg, Lynch, Scott & Milius).

Max.

WHICH MOVIE WILL BE CHOSEN FOR EPISODE 8?

Episode 8 of Generation-VHS should be ready for download from the Podcast Archive by the first day of May.

In the interim, here's a clue which might give you an idea about the film we'll be covering:

This 1991 escapade (an update-of-sorts of The Defiant Ones, according to some reviewers) comes from a director who has - perhaps - a unique record in Hollywood: of the eleven features he made between 1980 and 1992, four of them are either names after a kind of animal, or named after the animal who is the star of the movie.

Max.

WHICH MOVIE WILL BE CHOSEN FOR EPISODE 7?

Episode 7 of Generation-VHS should be ready for download from the Podcast Archive by the first day of March.

Whilst the finishing touches are being applied, here's a clue which might give you an idea about the film we'll be covering:

This steely-atmospheric SF feature from 1986 seems to have been intended (at least in part) as a near-future update of the "Frankenstein myth".

Max.

WHICH MOVIE WILL BE CHOSEN FOR EPISODE 6?

Episode 6 of Generation-VHS should be posted in the Podcast Archive by the first day of the New Year.

Happy New Year to you all!

Until then, here's a clue which might give you an idea about the film we'll be covering, in advance:

This little-seen Spaghetti Western from 1970 features a popular Italian star who had a much more widely-known genre hit in 1969. That movie is often recommended by worldly-wise fans of westerns who strongly admire Clint Eastwood's High Plains Drifter.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, ADVENTURES IN VHS

Noel Mellor has recently posted that he has decided to close his venerable podcast, Adventures in VHS

Generation-VHS would like to offer our thanks to Mr. Mellor for producing, in many of his episodes, some of the finest independent movie podcasts on the internet. His feature-length Mancunian Man episode, in particular, was an education and an inspiration.

The nineteen podcasts are still available for those who wish to buy the upcoming book associated with Adventures in VHS. The details are at the link below:

WHICH MOVIE WILL BE CHOSEN FOR EPISODE 5?

Episode 5 of Generation-VHS should be up in the Archive by the first day of December.

As ever, here's a clue in advance which might give you an idea about the film we'll be covering:

Many moviegoers are eagerly anticipating the arrival of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in a few weeks. We thought we'd throw in our tuppence-worth by celebrating a wonderful-but-overlooked vignette from 1999, directed by a fellow who's been integral to the development of "The Force..."

(And was integral to a brace of the earlier pictures, too.)

Max.

WHICH MOVIE WILL BE CHOSEN FOR EPISODE 4?

Episode 4 of Generation-VHS will be up on the site by the first day of November.

However, here's a clue in advance which might give you an idea about the movie we'll be covering:

This breathtaking 1987 sequel was directed by perhaps the most regular and most well-known behind-the-camera associate of martial arts superstar Jet Li.

(Although he does have around 100 credits for his acting roles, too.)

Max.

WHICH MOVIE WILL BE CHOSEN FOR EPISODE 3?

Episode 3 of Generation-VHS will "drop" by the first day of October.

In the meantime, this clue may well give you some idea about the movie we'll be covering:

This 1989 movie was directed by a film-maker who has worked with well-established Hollywood screenwriter David Loughery on at least three different occasions over an almost 30-year period.

(And this movie represents quite a shift in genre from the brace we've covered so far.)

Max.

WHICH MOVIE WILL BE CHOSEN FOR EPISODE 2?

Episode 2 of Generation-VHS will be posted by September 1.

In the meantime, try to work out which movie will be covered by considering the following clue:

This 1993 film is from a director who worked with now-famous comic-book movie scribe David S Goyer (Blade, The Dark Knight, Man Of Steel) a couple of times in the early days of his career.
